- The I Ching (中国: 易经; 拼音: Yìjīng), also known as the Classic of Changes or Book of Changes in English, is an ancient divination text and the oldest among the Chinese classics. Originally a divination manual during the Western Zhou period, it evolved into a cosmological text with philosophical commentaries known as the "Ten Wings" during the Warring States and early imperial period. Incorporating it as one of the Five Classics in the 2nd century BC, the I Ching has been subjected to scholarly commentary and has served as a basis for divination practice for centuries throughout the Far East. It has also played a significant role in shaping Western understanding of Eastern philosophy.
- The I Ching employs cleromancy, a form of divination that involves generating apparently random numbers. By converting four numbers between 6 and 9 into a hexagram, which corresponds to the King Wen sequence found in the I Ching book, users can then access the relevant interpretation. Throughout history, scholars have engaged in extensive debates over the meanings conveyed in the I Ching, and many commentators have utilized the book symbolically, particularly for guiding moral decision-making based on Confucian principles.
